
GARY SMOKE
ORGANIST
Gary Smoke received a BM in Organ Performance and a MM and DMA in Music Composition from The University of Alabama. His teachers included organist Warren Hutton, and composers Frederic Goossen, Ross Lee Finney, Andrew Imbrie, and Hubert H. Howe. His catalog of works includes an opera, orchestral music, choral music, organ music, piano music, and a large quantity
of chamber music.
He has been the recipient of a Fellowship Grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. He has received commissions from the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, the Mississippi Music Teachers Association, as well as various churches and performers. Dr. Smoke has been working as a church musician since 1979. He has been the organist at Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church since August 2004. He was the choir director and organist at the Fayette (AL) First United Methodist Church from 1994-2004. In addition for church music, he works as a composer, music copyist, and owns High Meadow Music Publishing—which publishes handbell music.
